Overview

First, you will need to install wireshark. You can download wireshark from http://www.wireshark.org/download.html

Wireshark is an Open Source, PC-based protocol analyzer project that provides network analysis features that can help a developer understand the behavior of a VoIP installation. Wireshark can monitor and collect Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packets from a network and sort and display them in an intelligible way.

Step 1: Changing the date format
  1. Open the wireshark application
  2. Go to View > Time Display Format
  3. Click "Date and Time of Day" (first option)

Step 2: Setup Network Interfaces
  1. Go to Interfaces > Capture
  2. A new screen will appear which will inform you of the network cards (NIC's) connected to your PC.

Step 3: Configuring Options and starting the application
  1. Click Options
  2. Select "Capture packets in promiscuous mode"

Step 4: Filtering the SIP protocol
  1. Wireshark will now be capturing all data packets on your PC. You will need to simply this by simply entering in "sip" into the filter field as shown below.
  2. Make a test call using a softphone with your engin service to the problem number. We recommend NCH. See KB157
  3. Click Stop when finished " it's the network card image with the x displayed"

Step 5: Saving Results in .pcap format
  1. Go to File > Save As
  2. Save as in .pcap format (first option)
  3. Email to support
